Tech Tip: How to make text clearer on an LCD flat panel monitor in Windows XP

If you're using an LCD flat panel monitor in your office, Windows XP may be able to display text more clearly than it currently does.  First, minimize all active programs by right clicking your mouse cursor on the blue taskbar at the bottom of the screen the left click Show Desktop.  Next, move your mouse cursor onto the desktop, right click anywhere, then left click Properties.  In the System Display dialog window, left click the Appearance tab, then left click the Effects button.   Confirm that Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts is checked, left click the drop down menu, then select Clear Type. Next, left click the Apply button then left click OK and watch your text on the desktop become easier to read!

Pain Relief: How to make your work station more ergonomic

Would you like your workstation to be more comfortable?  According to the Cornell University Ergonomics guide, your monitor should be placed directly in front of you, at arms length, and your eyes should be in line with a point about 2" to 3" below the top of the monitor to avoid unnecessary neck strain.  Your posture while sitting at your workstation is also important - your arms should be bent at a 90° angle over the keyboard and mouse and your wrists should be as flat as possible to avoid straining them. You can read more about the 10 steps for arranging an ergonomically correct workstation on the Cornell University Ergonomics guide here

Business Technology: Avoiding malicious web sites

Google recently joined forces with the Stop Badware Coalition to warn web users if they are about to view a malicious site that could attempt to damage their computer. Every time a web user performs a Google search and selects a hyperlink to a web page that contains spyware, adware, or other malicious software, they will see a pop-up from Google (click here for a preview) warning that the web site they are about to visit may harm their PC.  To learn more about this new Google search feature, please click here.

Your Questions Answered: Using MS Word's track changes mode

If you use Microsoft Word on a regular basis to compose documents for colleagues, you may or may not be aware of its collaborative capabilities.  Word's track changes mode allows multiple users to open, modify, and save documents with every change noted by underlined text.  This feature is especially helpful if several people are reviewing and modifying a document that needs to meet everyone's preferences.  To activate this handy function, open Microsoft Word, left click Tools on the menu bar, then left click Track Changes.  If you prefer shortcut keys, you can press CTRL + SHIFT + E to activate this mode.  Once you make any modifications, they will be underlined and indicate who made the change when the mouse cursor is placed above the change.  Hopefully using this mode will make your job easier!

Tech Terminology: Badware

At some point you or someone you know has had a computer that is a victim of badware.  Badware is the generic term for spyware, adware, malware, or imposter software that negatively impacts your computer's performance.  It may slow your computer to a crawl, cover your desktop with advertisement pop-ups,  hijack your browser's home page, prevent you from getting online, or even crash your system.   The root cause behind the rash of badware is intrusive marketing; someone wants to use your computer as a billboard to sell you something you probably don't want.  Once badware is installed, it can be difficult to remove even with multiple antispyware software tools.  We advise customers to be cautious when visiting unfamiliar web sites (especially those that have multiple advertisements on them), and to take care before downloading and installing any type of "free" software.  Many times free programs come with an additional price that you may not want to pay!
